About the Global LEI System
The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) maintains the only global, open, standardised identifier for legal entities. Every LEI is 20 characters long and encodes the issuing LOU, entity reference and a check digit under ISO 17442. Over 2.4 million LEIs are currently active across 200+ jurisdictions.

LEI structure at a glance
Characters 1-4 identify the issuing LOU. Characters 5-18 are the entity-specific identifier. The last two digits are the ISO 17442 check digits, computed via mod-97 over the alphanumeric string.

Yes. If your query isn't a valid 20-character LEI, the tool performs a legal-name search against GLEIF and returns up to 10 matches. Use the exact registered legal name for best precision.
Where do I get an LEI?▾
LEIs are issued by accredited LOUs (Local Operating Units) — a list is published at gleif.org. Common LOUs include LSEG (formerly LSE), Bloomberg, GMEI Utility and Ubisecure. Annual renewal is required to keep the LEI in an 'issued' status.
What does 'LAPSED' mean on an LEI record?▾
LAPSED indicates the annual maintenance fee wasn't paid on time and the record data hasn't been re-validated. The LEI still exists but should not be treated as current-verified until the entity renews.
