    What is SEC EDGAR?

    SEC EDGAR is the US Securities and Exchange Commission's free public database of filings for every publicly traded US company. Search at sec.gov/edgar/search — 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and DEF 14A filings are all downloadable at no cost.

    United States: choosing and checking the right record

    Choose the correct source
    Search the formation state's business register for an LLC or corporation. SEC EDGAR is a securities-disclosure system, not a national list of all US companies. Use the state links on this page to select the right register.
    Confirm the entity
    Save the state and entity/file number together. The same name can exist in multiple states. A foreign qualification is permission to register outside the formation state, not a separate original incorporation.
    When the search returns nothing
    Ask which state formed the entity. For a trading or assumed name, investigate the state or local DBA route rather than assuming an absent company-name match means no business exists.
    What the record cannot establish
    Registered agents receive legal notices; they are not necessarily owners, directors or operating offices. State records do not universally disclose members or beneficial owners. An EIN is not a state entity number.
