About the Australian Business Register
The Australian Business Register (ABR) is the single, authoritative record of every business operating in Australia. It's maintained by the Australian Taxation Office on behalf of the Commonwealth and is a free public service — every ABN, entity type, GST status and status-change date is downloadable at no cost.
When you need to look up an ABN
- Before paying an invoice — if the supplier's ABN isn't Active, PAYG at 47% must be withheld.
- KYC and supplier onboarding — verify the entity name, ABN status and trading names before contract execution.
- GST claims — only GST-registered ABNs can charge GST on invoices.
- Marketplace and platform compliance — Uber, Airtasker, Amazon AU all require an active ABN.
ABN structure
An ABN is an 11-digit number that passes a mod-89 check on the first digit minus one. For registered companies, the last 9 digits are the ACN issued by ASIC. Sole traders and trusts get an ABN without an ACN.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ABN?▾
An Australian Business Number is an 11-digit identifier issued by the Australian Business Register to every business, sole trader, partnership, trust and company operating in Australia. Suppliers must quote an ABN on tax invoices or the payer must withhold PAYG at the top marginal rate.
Is this ABN lookup free?▾
Yes. LemReveal's ABN lookup queries the official Australian Business Register (ABR) in real time. The ABR is a free public register — no fee, no account, no rate limit for casual use.
How do I check an ABN is active?▾
Enter the 11-digit ABN. The tool returns the current ABN Status (Active or Cancelled), the effective-from date, the entity type and whether the entity is registered for GST.
Can I search by business name?▾
Yes. If the query isn't a valid 11-digit ABN we perform a fuzzy match against ABR's business-name index and return up to 10 candidates ranked by relevance score.
What's the difference between an ABN and an ACN?▾
An ACN (Australian Company Number) is a 9-digit identifier issued by ASIC to companies only. An ABN is 11 digits and is issued to every business type. Companies typically have both — the ABN encodes the ACN with a 2-digit prefix.
How current is ABR data?▾
The ABR is updated in real time as businesses register, cancel or update their details with the ATO. LemReveal queries the live ABR public JSON endpoint, so results reflect the current official record.
Do I need an ABN to invoice in Australia?▾
If you supply goods or services in Australia and the payer is a business, either you quote a valid ABN on your invoice or the payer must withhold 47% PAYG from the payment. Registration is free at abr.gov.au.
