What an ACN tells you
The Australian Company Number is the permanent identity of a company at ASIC. It never changes, even when the company renames itself, so it is the safest thing to quote in a contract, an invoice or a supplier file. A name can be re-used; an ACN cannot.
ACN and ABN are not the same number
A company registered with ASIC gets a 9-digit ACN. When it registers with the ATO it gets an 11-digit ABN, which is normally the ACN with a two-digit prefix. Checking an ACN before you pay
- Confirm the company exists — a registered ACN resolves to a named, current record.
- Confirm the trading name matches — an invoice quoting a real ACN under a different company's name is the most common invoice fraud in Australia.
- Confirm it is not deregistered — a deregistered company cannot contract or be sued.
- Keep a dated record — an auditor wants to see what the register said on the day you paid, not today.
