Identify the entity by CIF/NIF
Every Spanish entity has a unique tax identifier (CIF for legal persons, NIF for individuals). The CIF is the most reliable join key for B2B data — names are duplicated, addresses change, but CIFs are immutable.

Pull the nota simple
The nota simple is the canonical summary document — current name, registered office, directors, share capital, and a list of recent filings. It's the entry-point document for Spanish due diligence.

Check VAT validity via VIES
A Spanish CIF is also the VAT number for intra-EU trade. Validating it via the EU VIES service confirms the entity is registered for cross-border VAT and is a stronger commercial-intent signal than a CIF alone.

Errores comunes a evitar
✗ Using the RMC to find detailed financial accounts.
✓ The RMC is a central index for names; detailed financial statements must be requested from the specific Provincial Registry or via the Colegio de Registradores portal.
✗ Assuming the CIF/NIF remains unchanged if a company moves province.
✓ While the NIF usually stays the same, the registration data will move to a different provincial registry, requiring a search in the new jurisdiction.

Las consultas básicas (denominación, CIF, domicilio, administradores) son gratuitas a través del Registro Mercantil Central. Las notas simples y certificaciones oficiales llevan una tasa reducida gestionada por el Registro Mercantil provincial correspondiente.
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre CIF y NIF?▾
Desde 2008 las personas jurídicas usan el NIF (antes CIF), formado por una letra inicial que indica la forma jurídica (A: S.A., B: S.L., F: cooperativa) seguida de 8 dígitos. En la práctica, muchas fuentes siguen llamando 'CIF' al NIF de sociedad.
¿Qué es el código CNAE?▾
El CNAE (Clasificación Nacional de Actividades Económicas) identifica la actividad principal de una sociedad. Cada inscripción en el Registro Mercantil incorpora al menos un código CNAE.
¿Cómo verifico un NIF-IVA español?▾
El NIF-IVA español (ES + NIF) se valida en la base VIES de la Comisión Europea. El Registro Mercantil muestra el NIF, del que se deriva el NIF-IVA para operaciones intracomunitarias.
¿Qué diferencia hay entre el Registro Mercantil Central y los provinciales?▾
Los Registros Mercantiles provinciales inscriben los actos de las sociedades de su provincia. El Registro Mercantil Central (RMC) centraliza la publicidad de denominaciones y publica el Boletín Oficial del Registro Mercantil (BORME).
